McKeldin Library Evacuated After Suspicious Bomb Threat

Earlier this month, the news broke that a UMD freshman was arrested by D.C. police in an undercover child pornography sting operation. The student was charged with distributing child pornography and crossing state lines to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor.

   University of Marland Police shut down McKeldin Libray Wednesday night for more than four hours after evacuating the building in response to someone asking the library staff a question with “concerning language.” Read more at CBS    

Greek Week Excitement Begins Over Comical Emails

Greek Life members begin their activities for the week-long celebration.
   Greek Week is an all greek life event that takes place during one whole week of the Spring semester, this year from April 14 to 21. This year the typically Jewish sorority Alpha Epsilon Phi was paired with the stereotypical Southern fraternity, Kappa Alpha Order. A member from each chapter wrote a comical email on their fraternity and sorority’s listserv on how to best get along with the opposite house, creating a joke in the greek community that some also took seriously. Many college students will earn their diplomas in the next few months, but as they enter the working world, they’re facing a tough job market. But the UMD students are dreaming big to succeed. Terp Weekly Edition’s Hye Chung asked UMD students what their dream jobs are.

In the spring students involved in Maryland Greek Life participate in Greek week. This week is filled with activities including athletics, dance competitions and even a burrito-eating contest. Sororities and Fraternities are paired up to increase momentum.
The WTF program will look to fix the lingering issues throughout the College Park campus.

ERC Announces New Cross-Fitness Training Center

In the spring students involved in Maryland Greek Life participate in Greek week. This week is filled with activities including athletics, dance competitions and even a burrito-eating contest. Sororities and Fraternities are paired up to increase momentum.
The new fitness studio will replace the current sporting good shops already located in the recreational center.
   The university recently announced that they will be replacing the pro shop in the Eppley Recreational Center with a state-of-the-art cross-fitness training center. As on now, the center is expected to open some time during the summer. Read more at theDiamondback    

Student-run Comedy Group Looks to Bring More Laughs to the Campus Community

Luke Weineke, the center picture, is the group’s treasurer and been doing stand-up for three years.
Off The Wall is the university’s only student group devoted solely to stand-up comedy. All shows are primarily held in the Stamp Student Union with a first come-first serve seating arrangement. Their Facebook is regularly updated with all of the group’s upcoming and past shows. Like them on Facebook!

Boston marathon explosions spark up intensive K-9 training

The University of Maryland conducted K9 bomb squad training this week in order to prevent any bomb attacks. This comes just days after the Boston Marathon Bombings.
One of UMD's bravest takes a break from strenuous training.
     UMD’s police department conducted precautionary K-9 bomb squad training this week after Boston’s bomb attack that killed three and injured over 170 people. Investigators prepared Sunday for a chance to interview the surviving suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings as they turned to finding a motive for the bombing. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, was in serious condition and unable to speak because of a bullet injury to his throat before his Friday capture. Read it at Reuters    

UMD freshman charged in child porn sting

Earlier this month, the news broke that a UMD freshman was arrested by D.C. police in an undercover child pornography sting operation. The student was charged with distributing child pornography and crossing state lines to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor.
Akshay Rajshekar was arrested after arranging to have sex with someone he thought was a 12-year-old girl, according to authorities.
   Earlier this month, UMD had it’s own spin of ‘Dateline NBC’s To Catch a Predator’. On the 7th floor of the Hagerstown Hall dorm, Akshay Rajashekar seemed like any other freshman. But the 18-year-old from Salisbury, Md., was arrested in D.C. Monday after an undercover cyber sting. Police say he was planning to meet a man and his 12-year-old daughter for an illicit rendezvous. The man was an undercover cop who’d posted an ad on craigslist. Read it at WJLA    

Big 10 game plan tallies up the pros and cons

The first public forum about this university’s move to the Big 10 was held last Tuesday. The biggest issue discussed was the influx of money that the move will bring, and whether or not some of the sports that were forced to be cut due to a budget crisis would be brought back.

   Last fall, UMD made the bold decision to leave the ACC in favor of the Big 10. The first public forum about the big move to the Big 10 was held last Tuesday. The move is expected to be a big pay day for UMD’s athletic department, which may be favorable for the various varsity teams cut last year. Read it at the Diamondback

   This spring, approximately 3000 terps will flip their tassels and move on to the tough job market. While most soon-to-be alumnus will have to start off on the bottom rung, that won’t stop them from dreaming big. Forbes’ tips

   Before classes end, there are scores to be settled on Frat Row. Sisters and brothers pair up to show off their letters at this year’s Greek Week. This week is packed with activities including athletics, dance competitions and even a burrito-eating contest. Consider going greek    

MGMT’s audio thunder strikes UMD’s Art Attack 2013

For the last two years, Student Entertainment Events at the University of Maryland have booked hip-hop artists to headline Art Attack, the semester’s largest music festival. This year, however, the student group took a completely different direction by selecting psych-rock’s MGMT to play at this year’s concert. Tickets for the May 3rd performance are already available and can be purchased at umdtickets.com
MGMT will perform at this year’s Art Attack.
   With eight thousand seats available, Art Attack is by far the largest music festival on campus. For the last two years, Student Entertainment Events at UMD have booked hip-hop artists to headline Art Attack. This year, however, the student group took a completely different direction by selecting psych-rock’s MGMT to play at the concert, which will occur on Friday, May 3, at Byrd Stadium. In the past, UMD students complained about Art Attacks’ headlining bands – seeing as how the selected musicians were no longer relevant. Now, some students are pretty pleased with MGMT’s upcoming performance, while others could care less or are disconcerted.

Legalization of Weed

                  The above photo shows marijuanna in hand. Although, the state of Maryland has legalized marijuanna for medical purposes only, the University of Maryland’s Student Government has taken it a step further.  

Gas Tax

                    This photo shows how the gas tax has affected gas prices. In an effort to supply funds to the public transit system throughout Maryland, the Maryland Senate approved an additional gas tax that will be implemented starting in July. The tax will include a four cents charge for every gallon of gas purchased. Democratic governor Martin O’Malley is being heavily criticized by state Republicans, as they believe this tax will only add to the deficient rather than solve transit issues.

                  This is Rebel, the horse that was born on campus. On March 21st Rebel the colt became the first horse born at Maryland in 30 years. For the coordinator of the Equine studies program Dr. Amy Burk is rewarded for 12 years of hard work.

                     ERC has opened its doors for any students who need help with stress need relaxation.  Many students find finals time to be extremely stressful, but have found different ways of coping with this stress. Many students turn to exercise to ease their mind of the everyday tensions of dealing with school work.

                    Florida Gulf Coast, this year’s Cinderella story in the NCAA basketball tournament, celebrates an improbable win. Every year, upsets in the NCAA tournament results in torn brackets. The same thing happened this year when unexpecting team made it much further than people ever expected.

                    Zeke Chow preparing a salad at the AOII house.  Zeke Chow is the personal chef for the 47 girls who live in the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority house. He prepares lunch and dinner for the girls Monday through Friday. Students who live in one of the 15 sorority houses on the UMD campus don’t have to worry about dining plans since their cafeterias are right downstairs.  

Passover Diets

Passover is an eight day Jewish holiday where they celebrate the freedom of the Jewish people from Egyptian rule and oppresion. They are not allowed to eat leavened bread, which is a problem for some University of Maryland students, who find it hard to eat around campus. Some students easily keep the Passover diet, while some have given up keeping it while they are at school.

UMD student creates justlikeyou.org, a nonprofit website to help LGBT members to share their stories and find support in the process of ‘coming out’ about their sexual orientatiom to friends and family.

The new film has 20 minutes of new footage, as well as added graphics and 3D scenes. However, response to the movie is mixed.

Smoking Ban on Campus

Cigarette butts like these will no longer be dispersed around the UMD campus. The smoking ban will not only promote the health of students and faculty, but will also clean up campus.
A smoking ban will be in affect on all UMD Campuses starting July 1, 2013. As of now, the university doesn’t have the resources to carry out this ban to the full extent, so the campus community will rely on students and faculty to remind others of the smoking policy. This is all in an effort to promote the health of both smokers and non smokers.

Flu Epidemic

The Assistant Director for Health Promotions at the University of Maryland’s Health Center, Hope McPhatter, spoke with TWE’s Judy Nam about this year’s flu season. According to the Center for Disease Control, the virus is one of the most deadly in recent history and continues to reach epidemic levels this month after dozens of deaths nationwide. McPhatter says university health officials are making a concerted push to get students vaccinated and are working around the clock to aid the growing number of students who are already infected. Hope McPhatter, the assistant director for Health Promotions at UMD’s Health Center works around the clock to educate students on how to prevent getting the flu during this spring semester. McPhatter says spring is the peak time when the flu virus is most prevalent, which also makes this season one of the busiest for staff members at the university’s Health Center because students, faculty and staff are all eager to come in and learn how to prevent infection. She says getting the flu vaccine is the best possible way to avoid the virus. But if you unfortunately do get the flu, then you can always call the Health Center’s Urgent Care line and they will help you take the next step by telling you whether or not you should seek treatment at the clinic or just wait it out by resting in bed.

Copyright Alert Those who chose to illegally download music and movies may soon face tighter regulation from Internet Service Providers.  The Copyright Alert System, a new program that took effect last month, is designed to educate internet consumers about ways to properly access and share copyrighted conten.

We’re surrounded by social media daily Maryland became the first state to ban employers, both private and governmental, from asking current or prospective employees for their passwords, a law that also prohibits employees from downloading employers’ confidential information to their personal websites.

The goal of the rifle and pistol club, however, is to convey the positive side of gun use. a side not often displayed, he says, in the media. The feelings lawmakers and citizens have toward gun control vary depending on factors such as political party, socioeconomic status and personal relationship with firearms. The University of Maryland’s rifle and pistol club believes that feelings can be skewed due to the media.

Dining Halls Early Hours

After students have repeatedly requested for the University of Maryland dining halls to open earlier on the weekends, Dining Services have responded with a two semester pilot program. The North and South Campus Diners will now open at 10 a.m. instead of 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Cold continental breakfast items such as bagels, muffins, donuts, fruit, yogurt, and cereal will be served to the hungry students who wake up early.

Kayla Taitz, a UMD junior uploads covers of her favorite songs on YouTube. Kayla Taitz is a UMD junior with a passion for singing. The 20-year-old has a youtube page where she posts covers of some of her favorite songs. With more than 5,000 subscribers her fans can’t get enough of her creative mashups.

  Disability Housing Improving on Campus Many students at Maryland complain about walking long distances across campus, but for others, it’s hard just to get up the stairs. In the early 2000s, the university had a shortage of housing for students with disabilities, but a decade long effort has brought about dramatic change. By:  Hye Chung

    UMD’S Shuttle-UM drivers Welcome New Buses  By: Judy Nam  Credit: Judy Nam UMD bought 11 new Shuttle-UM buses this spring semester. The upgraded models offer passengers more room and feature clean Diesel engines. All employees welcome the new buses, but some UMD students loathe how and where Shuttle-UM funded the money to buy them.

UMD Students Salaries After Graduation

University of Maryland graduates earn the second highest starting salaries out of the nation’s stat flagship schools according to CBS’s money watch report. They came in below University of California at Berkley. Broadcast Legend Reflects on his Career
